Etymology

Mașină entered Romanian from French machine in the 19th century, during the wave of Romance vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. French machine descends from Latin machina, which itself came from Greek mēkhanē, meaning device or contrivance. The word first meant any mechanical device in Romanian and only later narrowed, in everyday speech, to mean specifically a car.
