Etymology

Rămâne descends from Latin remanere, a verb built from the prefix re- and manere, meaning to stay or wait. The word passed into Romanian through ordinary spoken Latin in the region, keeping its core sense of staying in place or being left over. English remain reached the same Latin source by a different route, through Old French, which is why the two words still look alike.
