Etymology

Romanian borrowed metru from French mètre in the nineteenth century, as part of a broader effort to modernize the language and adopt the metric system. French mètre in turn came from Greek metron, meaning measure. The word replaced older Romanian units of length such as stânjen (fathom) as the metric system became official.
