Etymology

Kilometru entered Romanian in the 19th century from French kilomètre, part of a wave of French and Italian borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. The French word itself was coined from Greek khilioi, meaning thousand, and metron, meaning measure. Romanian adapted the French spelling to its own phonetic writing system, replacing the French -mètre ending with -metru.
