Etymology

Romanian borrowed "a imagina" from French "imaginer" during the nineteenth-century re-Latinization of its vocabulary, when Romanian scholars deliberately replaced Slavic and Ottoman terms with Western Romance ones. French "imaginer" itself descends from Latin "imaginari", meaning to picture something to oneself, built on "imago", meaning image or likeness. The reflexive Romanian construction "a-și imagina" mirrors the French reflexive "s'imaginer".
