Etymology
Dura descends from Latin durare, which meant both to harden and to last, built on the adjective durus, hard. The shift from physical hardness to temporal endurance already happened in spoken Latin, so Romanian inherited the time-related sense directly. Sister languages kept the same root: French durer, Italian durare, and Spanish durar all mean to last.
