Etymology
Romanian did not keep the Latin word for left, 'sinister'. That word survives instead as 'sinistru', meaning ominous or disastrous, a sign the old term picked up bad connotations and was pushed out of everyday use. Most Romanian etymological dictionaries list 'stâng' as being of unclear, likely pre-Roman origin, unrelated to its Latin neighbor. Other Romance languages solved the same problem differently: French uses 'gauche' and Spanish 'izquierdo', both non-Latin substitutions of their own.
