Etymology

Romanian Coreea comes from the Western European name for Korea, which itself traces back to Goryeo, the dynasty that ruled the peninsula for several centuries in the Middle Ages. The name most likely reached Romanian through French Corée, with the Romanian feminine definite article -a fused onto the borrowed stem coree, the same way idee becomes ideea. As a modern geographic borrowing rather than inherited vocabulary, it has no Proto-Indo-European root of its own.
