Etymology
Romanian borrowed "laser" directly from English in the mid-20th century, alongside the rest of the world's technical vocabularies. The English word itself began as the acronym LASER, for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, coined in 1957-1959 by American physicists working on optical amplifiers. Romanian took the acronym whole, without translating or adapting its parts, and treats it as an ordinary neuter noun.
