Etymology
Categorie entered Romanian from French catégorie, part of a wave of French-derived vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. French took it from Latin categoria, which came from Greek katēgoria, meaning an accusation or an assertion made in public. In Greek philosophy, especially in Aristotle, the word narrowed to mean a basic class into which things can be sorted.
