Etymology
Obraz entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic obrazŭ, meaning image or form, during centuries of contact with Slavic populations in the Balkans. Modern Slavic languages keep the same root: Russian and Bulgarian obraz mean image or icon, while Serbian obraz means cheek or honor, close to the Romanian sense. In Romanian the word settled on the physical cheek but kept a figurative link to honor and shame. It is one of many everyday Romanian words that came from Slavic rather than Latin.
