Îngriji is formed inside Romanian from the prefix în- and the noun grijă, meaning care or worry, plus the verb-forming suffix -i. Grijă itself comes from a Slavic source and entered Romanian through contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors in the medieval period. The prefix în- here works like English en- in encourage, turning a noun into a verb meaning to put someone into that state.
