Etymology

Romanian borrowed "criminal" from French "criminel", itself from Latin "criminalis", an adjective built on "crimen" (accusation, charge, crime). The word entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the language's legal and administrative vocabulary. It kept both its noun sense (a person guilty of a crime) and its adjective sense (relating to crime).
