Etymology
Polițist was formed in Romanian from poliție (police) plus the agent suffix -ist, on the model of French policier and similar European coinages. Poliție itself entered Romanian from French police, which traces back through Latin politia to Greek politeia, meaning civil administration or citizenship, from polis, city. The word thus names a person tied to the institution of the police, in the same way artist names a person tied to art.
