Etymology
Profesor entered Romanian in the nineteenth century through French professeur, itself from Latin professor, an agent noun built on profiteri, meaning to declare or acknowledge openly. The Latin verb combines pro- (forth) with fateri (to confess, to speak). This borrowing was part of a broader wave of French and Latin vocabulary that modernized Romanian and pushed out earlier Slavic-derived school terms.
