Etymology

Rapid entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of the deliberate re-Latinization of the language, borrowed from French rapide, itself from Latin rapidus. The Latin adjective meant tearing away or hurrying, and it derived from the verb rapere, to seize or snatch. The same Latin root also gave Romanian its native verb a răpi, to abduct.
