Etymology

Romanian borrowed "critic" from French "critique", which itself descends from Latin "criticus" and ultimately Greek "kritikós", meaning able to judge or discern. The Greek word comes from "krinein", to separate or judge. Romanian took the word directly as a modern borrowing rather than inheriting it from spoken Latin, which is why it looks so close to its French and English relatives.
