Romanian "culca" descends from Latin "collocare", meaning to place or set something in position. Regular sound changes in Vulgar Latin, loss of the intervocalic consonant and vowel reduction, produced the Romanian form. The same Latin verb gave French "coucher" and Italian "coricare", both of which also narrowed in meaning to lying down or going to bed.
