Etymology

Culcat is the past participle of the verb a culca, and of its reflexive form a se culca, meaning to lay something down or, reflexively, to lie down and go to bed. The verb comes from Latin collocare, to place or put in position, a compound of com- (together) and locare (to place), itself from locus (place). Sound changes in spoken Latin and early Romanian wore collocare down to culca, and the meaning narrowed from general placing to the specific act of lying down or being put to bed.
