Etymology
Beat comes from Latin bibitus, the past participle of bibere, "to drink." Over time the word settled into Romanian as a standalone adjective for intoxication rather than staying tied to the verb as a literal participle. The modern verb "to drink" in Romanian, a bea, comes from the same Latin root but now forms its own participle, băut. Beat split off early and kept the older, more compact form.
