Etymology
Datorită began life as the feminine past participle of a datori (a variant of a datora, 'to owe'), itself built on the root dator, 'debtor, one who owes'. Over time this participle froze into a preposition, so that datorită X literally meant something like 'owed to X' before it settled into its modern sense of 'thanks to X' or 'due to X'. Dator traces back to Latin debitor, 'debtor', from the verb debere, 'to owe'.
