Etymology
Romanian soldat, meaning soldier, was borrowed from Italian soldato or French soldat as part of a wave of military vocabulary that entered Romanian from Western Romance languages. The word traces back to Latin solidus, a gold coin used to pay medieval mercenaries. A soldato was literally one who received that pay. The related noun sold, meaning wage or salary, came into Romanian through the same channel and still carries that sense today.
