Etymology

Romanian borrowed șansă from French chance in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. French chance descends from Old French cheance, meaning the fall of dice, from Vulgar Latin cadentia, a noun built on cadere, to fall. The sense shifted from a literal fall of the dice to the abstract idea of luck or opportunity.
