Etymology
Romanian borrowed șansă directly from French chance in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loans that reshaped modern Romanian vocabulary. French chance itself descends from Vulgar Latin cadentia, meaning a falling, from the verb cadere, to fall. The image behind the word is dice falling a certain way, so a chance was originally a roll of the dice.
