Etymology
Romanian borrowed "conta" in the 19th century, during the wave of French and Italian loanwords that modernized the language. The source is French "compter" and Italian "contare", both descending from Latin "computare" (to calculate, to reckon), itself built from "com-" (together) and "putare" (to reckon, to think over). The core sense of tallying things up extended naturally to the figurative sense of mattering or being relied upon.
