Etymology
Romanian borrowed "cont" from French "compte" in the 19th century, part of a large wave of French and Italian loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary during that period. French "compte" comes from Latin "computus" and the verb "computare", meaning to reckon or calculate, itself built from "com-" (together) and "putare" (to reckon, think). English "count" and "account" descend from the same Latin verb through Old French, which makes them close relatives of the Romanian word.
