Etymology
Contabil entered Romanian in the 19th century through French comptable and Italian contabile, part of a broader wave of Romance borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. Both source words trace to Latin computare, "to reckon, calculate," built from com- ("together") and putare ("to reckon, think over"). The Romanian form kept the Latin-derived root cont- (account, tally) and added the adjectival suffix -abil.
