Etymology
Romanian borrowed "rang" from French "rang" and German "Rang" in the 18th and 19th centuries, as the Romanian elite adopted Western European administrative and military vocabulary. Both the French and German words trace back to Frankish, where a term for a circle or ring of men came to mean a line or order of standing. The shift from a literal ring shape to a social hierarchy happened because warriors and courtiers were arranged in ordered rows or circles by status.
