Etymology
Telegramă entered Romanian in the 19th century from French télégramme, itself built from Greek tele- ("far off") and gramma ("something written, a letter"). The word spread across European languages together with the telegraph technology it named. Romanian absorbed it as part of a wider wave of French-derived vocabulary for modern institutions and technology.
