Etymology
Nobilă is the feminine form of nobil, from Latin nobilis, meaning well known or of high standing. Nobilis itself came from an older form gnobilis, tied to the verb gnoscere, cognoscere, to know. The sense shifted from known to well known to socially eminent, and finally to noble by birth or character.
