Virgină is a learned borrowing, taken into Romanian from French vierge or directly from Latin virgo, virginem during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize the language. Romanian already had a native inherited word for the same idea, fecioară, so virgin/virgină entered as a more formal, literary alternative. The Latin root virgo itself has a disputed origin, so no PIE root is given here.
