Etymology

Patrie entered Romanian from French patrie in the nineteenth century, during the wave of Romance relatinization that reshaped the modern Romanian lexicon. French patrie descends from Latin patria, the feminine form of patrius, meaning of the father. The underlying idea is the land of one's fathers, a country claimed through ancestry rather than mere residence.
