Etymology

Romanian borrowed "sală" from French "salle" during the nineteenth-century wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian vocabulary. French "salle" itself comes from a Germanic word for a hall or dwelling, brought into Gallo-Romance by Frankish settlers. The same Germanic root gave English "hall" and German "Saal". So Romanian, English, and German each reached a similar word for a large room by different routes.
