Etymology

Romanian borrowed război from a Slavic source close to Old Church Slavonic razbojь, meaning fight or skirmish. That word split from raz- (apart, thoroughly) plus boj (fight, blow), the same root behind the Slavic verb for to strike or to beat. Romanian kept the martial sense as its main use, while a related device sense, the weaving loom, survived as a secondary meaning, echoing a similar split in some Slavic languages.
