Etymology
Arunca descends from Latin eruncare, which meant to weed out or pull up by the roots. Romanian shifted the sense from pulling out weeds to throwing, a change already visible by the early stages of the language. The initial e- of the Latin form was absorbed into the Romanian verbal prefix a-. Most other Romance languages replaced this verb with descendants of iactare, which is why arunca has no close match outside Romanian.
