Etymology

Ușă descends from Latin ostium, meaning entrance or mouth of a river, itself built on os, the Latin word for mouth. Popular Latin forms shifted the word toward ustia, which evolved through Romanian sound changes into ușă. The same Latin root spread through Romance and even reached English by a different path.
