Etymology
Tânăr comes from Latin tener, tenerum, meaning tender or soft. Over time in Romanian the meaning shifted from physical softness to youthfulness, so the word came to describe a person still in early life rather than something delicate to the touch. This is a case where Romanian kept the Latin form but narrowed and changed its sense, unlike sister languages that kept the original meaning.
