Etymology

Adevăr comes from a Latin base built on ad and de plus verus, meaning true. Romanian dictionaries reconstruct the source as an unattested Vulgar Latin form, adveritas, rather than pointing to a surviving classical Latin word. The core piece, ver-, is the same element that gives Latin veritas its meaning of truth. Over time the compound settled into the single noun Romanians use today for truth.
