Vină comes from Latin vitium, meaning fault, flaw, or vice. The word passed into Romanian through ordinary sound change, with the final consonant smoothing into the feminine noun ending -ă. The same Latin root gave Italian vizio and French vice, and through French it reached English as vice and vicious. It is unrelated to Romanian vin, meaning wine, despite the similar spelling.
