Etymology
Războinic is built from război, the Romanian word for war, plus the suffix -nic, which turns a noun into an adjective meaning prone to or characterized by that thing. Război itself comes from Old Slavic razboi, meaning destruction or war, formed from a prefix meaning apart and a root meaning to strike or beat. The same Slavic root gave Romanian a second, unrelated-looking sense of război: a weaving loom, since a loom's beater also strikes.
