Etymology
The core sense, basket, descends from Latin cophinus, itself borrowed from Greek kophinos. The same Latin word also gave French coffre (chest, trunk) and, through Old French, English coffin. In Romanian the word later broadened by metaphor to name a chimney flue and, separately, a facial pimple, both small cavity-like or protruding shapes reminiscent of a basket.
