Etymology

Most Romanian core vocabulary descends from Latin, but the noun gând (thought) is a Slavic borrowing, related to words meaning to guess or divine. The verb a gândi was built from this borrowed root using native Romanian verb machinery. Its present tense, including gândesc, takes the inchoative -esc- marker found in many Romanian -i verbs, the same pattern seen in citesc (I read) from a citi.
