Etymology
Romanian borrowed avocat from French avocat in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French legal and administrative vocabulary. The French word descends from Latin advocatus, literally one called in to help, from advocare, formed from ad (to) and vocare (to call). The original sense was a person summoned to speak in someone's defense before a court.
