Etymology

Amândoi comes from the fusion of Latin ambo, meaning both, with the Romanian numeral doi, two. As the bare form of ambo eroded in spoken Latin, speakers reinforced its meaning by tacking on the native word for two, and the two elements fused into a single word. The feminine form amândouă shows the same pattern, pairing the old Latin base with Romanian două, two. This kind of double-marking, where an inherited word gets reinforced by a native numeral, is common in Romanian.
