Etymology
Știm is the first person plural present form of a ști, "to know." The verb descends from Latin scire, which meant "to know" or "to discern." Romanian kept this root for its main verb of knowing, while most other Romance languages (French savoir, Italian sapere, Spanish saber) switched to a different Latin verb, sapere, "to taste, to be wise."
