Etymology
Aș is the first-person singular of the Romanian conditional auxiliary (aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar), which combines with a bare infinitive to build the conditional mood, as in aș vrea, "I would want." Unlike French or Italian, which fused their conditional endings onto the infinitive, Romanian kept this auxiliary as a separate little word. It traces back to the Latin pluperfect subjunctive of habere, "to have": habuissem, habuisses, habuisset, and so on, which shrank over centuries into aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar.
