Etymology
Romanian borrowed "soldă" from Italian "soldo" or French "solde" in the nineteenth century, as the modern Romanian army adopted Western European military terminology. Both source words go back to Latin "solidus," a gold coin used by the Roman state to pay its troops. The same root gave Romanian "soldat" (soldier), a person defined by the fact that he is paid.
