Etymology

Defect entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized Romanian scientific and abstract vocabulary. It traces to Latin defectus, a noun built from the verb deficere, meaning 'to fail, to run short.' Deficere itself joins the prefix de- ('away, down') with facere ('to do, to make'), so the word literally points to something that falls short of being properly made. English 'defect' and Romanian 'defect' are close cognates, both descending from that same Latin source.
