Etymology

Romanian "orez" descends from Greek óryza, the same root that gave Latin oryza and, through French and Italian, the English word "rice". The Greek term itself was a loanword from an Old Indo-Aryan source, not an inherited Indo-European word, so it entered Greek from trade contact with rice-growing regions of Asia. Romanian likely picked it up through Byzantine Greek or Balkan trade contact rather than directly from Latin.
