Etymology

Deplasa entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a borrowing from French déplacer, part of a wave of French-based vocabulary that modernized Romanian. Déplacer itself breaks down as de- (away) plus placer (to place), and placer traces back through Old French place to Latin platea and Greek plateia, meaning a broad street or open space. So the word's deep history is about open, flat ground before it ever meant motion.
